Ridge augmentation

1. What is ridge augmentation?

Ridge augmentation is a surgical procedure that is performed in situations when the patient lacks the height of the alveolar bone. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia by an oral surgeon. In the augmentation itself, artificial bone substitutes are used to compensate for the lost bone of the alveolar ridge.

2. What is the goal of the procedure itself?

The goal of the procedure is the reconstruction of the alveolar ridge, in order to achieve the appropriate height of the alveolar bone. Alveolar bone height is required to allow implants to be placed in the patients gums.

3. How do I know if I am a candidate for ridge augmentation?

First of all, it is necessary to visit a dentist who will make a treatment plan at the first examination. If you are a candidate for implant placement, it is mandatory to do a 3D X-ray image. Using this image, the oral surgeon assesses the condition of your bone, ie its density and dimensions. Tooth loss often leads to bone loss.

For implant placement, the ridge of the bone needs to be high enough, wide, or both, to keep the implant stable. If the bone shrinks, it is necessary to make an upgrade of the bone (augmentation) in order to successfully place the implant in it. Bone augmentation is a procedure that implants artificial bone. After the upgrade, you should wait a couple of months for the bone to fully coalesce.

4. Is the procedure painless?

Ridge augmentation is performed under local anesthesia and is therefore completely painless. The Dental Plaza Clinic guarantees the quality of all interventions and the maximum comfort of its patients.

5. What does the ridge augmentation intervention itself look like?

This oral surgery is performed under local anesthesia. After that, the incision forms an approach to the alveolar ridge. The prepared artificial bone is then placed in the place indicated for that. Appropriate biocollagen membranes are placed over artificial bone substitutes. Their function is to prevent the growth of bone tissue into soft tissue in the healing process and to enable adequate healing. After that, sutures are placed, which will ensure that everything is stably firmly fixed.

6. How long does this intervention last?

The length of the intervention depends on the size of the region to be included in the augmentation process. The most common duration of such interventions is between 30 and 60 minutes.

7. Can I implant immediately after augmentation of the alveolar ridge?

Implant placement is impossible immediately after the augmentation of the ridge. It takes at least 4-6 months after that. This time period is necessary as the artificial bone is completely fused with the ridge bone, which creates ideal conditions for implant placement in that region. When this process is over, you can continue the therapy, ie implant placement.

8. What is the postoperative course after ridge augmentation?

After surgery, the discomfort should be minimal. Postoperative pain and swelling are insignificant during a few days after the intervention. With the instructions of the dentist, you can take painkillers and possibly antibiotics during that period. There may be a slight swelling of the gums and face, in which case we recommend the use of cold compresses. In the period from 5 to 7 days after the procedure, your diet should be limited to soft foods and in that period you should avoid more physical activity. The Dental Plaza team is always at your disposal for any questions.

9. Can ridge augmentation be implanted to pregnant women?

Any exposure to uncomfortable situations during pregnancy is not desirable. Since procedures such as ridge augmentation include examination and X-rays, as well as the use of anesthesia, most dentists advise expectant mothers to wait until the baby is born, and then they can be completely sure that oral intervention will not harm the baby.

10. What is the age limit for ridge augmentation?

There is no age limit for ridge augmentation.

11. Are there any contraindications for the ridge augmentation process?

There is no absolute contraindication to ridge augmentation. Possible limitations in some cases may be in elderly patients with chronic systemic diseases, so certain medications they use on a daily basis may be contraindicated for this oral surgery. In consultation with an oral surgeon, it will be determined whether there is an obstacle to this intervention.
